I Get The Tough Questions [Dec. 18th, 2007|02:58 am]

Sunday, a woman and her boyfriend walk into the comic shop and the woman says to me and my co-worker Craig, "OK, so you know like when a person walks into a movie store and asks for a song, but they can only sing one note? Well..." And she trails off.

With magnificent self-control, we neither looked at one another nor tilted our heads into "BAROO?" position. Craig just said, "Give it a shot."

So she continues, "OK, two years ago I was in a friend's apartment and he had these comics on his shelf and they were really thick and the art was, like, black and white and really fantastic..."

I smile. "Was it about an aardvark?" I ask.

Her jaw drops open. "IT WAS!!! How did you know?!" I led her over to the three Cerebus phone books we had in stock and told her the author was Dave Sim.

She continued, "I like how I was going on and on with all these details and you just went straight for the aardvark."

That's me. I go straight for the aardvark.

I hope it was the early, pre-paranoid-asshole Sim.

We used to LOVE cerebus... until one highly disturbing time on a trip to visit family in Yelm, and we were staying at a hotel in Olympia rather than sleep on a couch with the wolves (yes, my uncle kept wolves) but ... we stopped to eat lunch and read the comics we'd picked up. And it was the Snout Rape ... and that was it for Penny. I couldn't handle the next one after that because there wasn't any of the charm. The art was still good though. It's really sad that he lost it to paranoid schizophrenia.

That is a fantastico story. I always thought you were an aardvark-oriented straight-shooter.

I like how she at least admitted exactly what she was doing, though. I'm sure you get some people who come in and do the exact same thing without knowing how unreasonable they are.

P.S. I (heart shape) Craig.

It's true, it was nice. But I don't usually walk into MOVIE stores to ask about SONGS (that was the BAROO? part).

You need to put "I go straight for the aardvark" in your .signature file or something. It's just too good not to use.

Heh. Yeah, her boyfriend said "that belongs on a t-shirt" and we all agreed.

Of course! What do you take me for? I upheld my womanly AND comickly duties by telling her how he went batshit around the divorce and the rape and general increase in misogyny.
