(And maybe I should add some other stuff, like getting certified to teach ESL? I dunno. I still want to do job coaching/life coaching, but without a website, I feel like an idiot.)

Er, wait. Focus.

PLEASE help me brainstorm on how I can get more clients?!

I've done the flyer thing with tear tabs and that works a bit. I've asked my clients to tell other people about me, and that works a bit. I suppose I could teach a class in it, but there are other people who are MUCH BETTER at teaching copy editing than I. I've joined a couple of forums and put my editing link in my .sig, then contributed intelligently to conversations (instead of just pimpin' mah skillz). No nibbles. I've done a fair amount of work in the Psychology arena and am very familiar with the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Style Guide, but I dunno how to target people writing Psych papers.

"Axe, Beak and Claw"?

Sure, give me a deadline. (More than a week from today.)

You want Word with Track Changes or text with comments between paragraphs? Or Word with changed text in another color? Those are my three standard modes, but I'm willing to do something else if you'd like. I can easily save in RTF format to interface with an older Mac.

If Word, can I use the sticky note to insert comments?

Um...we're overdue for another life coaching session for me. I think I need some help in not feeling like I need to do everything all at once. Also in establishing patterns. Like, this week, I was going to get up early each day to write. I thought it would be easier to start this week because of the time difference. Hah! Was I ever wrong. The alarm went off at 6am and I GOT UP and RESET IT to an hour later.

Not that my desire for another session helps your present circumstances.

You don't have to teach copy-editing to teach something. Why not look into teaching freshman composition somewhere? Or a writing course at the adult ed center? It's both a way to get your name out there and also to make money while doing it.

I had another thought, which is that you could look into advertising. I know it costs money, but maybe if you advertised on, say, the site of a webcomic or webzine instead of a magazine, that might be a lot cheaper.

Yeah, the question is, where should I advertise?

I mean, students are nice (except for the ones who won't pay me), but they're not generally good for repeat business.

I need to target paper-writing grown-ups some how...

Here's a couple of things.

- Redo your flyer to be a bit more eye catching. I believe you know enough graphic artists, or at least people with graphic arts experience to help you out.

AND/OR Pick up a copy of "The Non-Designer's Design Book" by Robin Williams (the graphics artist, not aging comedian) Its short, has lots of examples and a very easy read -- especially for people like me who go "uhhh..." when trying to do any design work however simple.

- Try taking out an ad in The Boston Globe, The Phoenix, etc. Also hit up the college newspapers in the area. (Harvard, Tufts, MIT, etc)

Huh. Ads in student newspapers didn't occur to me, thanks!

Would you mind if I punched up your flyer a bit - made it more eye-catching or wit-catching for the St. John's students? And even if you'd rather I didn't do that, we can put up more flyers at the local universities. I just had a thought - what if I put up the flyer at JHU in the psychology department too since you are interested/able to do more of that specific work.
Other than that, I'd sponsor an ad in the Phoenix or something similar if you want to try that :) It looks like it's $10 - I can send you that and a bit more towards the time you've spent with JB.

Hack it up, pack it up, do what thou wilt.

I'd also be delighted if you'd swing by JHU's psych. dept.

I wish I knew where the psych departments were at the various local uni.

Ten bucks for a Phoenix ad? I can handle that.
