If you need some imagery to assist you in your contemplation of modern consumption and the consumer culture in general, Chris Jordan is the artist for you.
He has a book out, called IN KATRINA'S WAKE, Portraits of Loss from An Unnatural Disaster from Princeton Architectural Press, 2006. 100% of Chris's proceeds from his non-profit book get donated to Gulf Coast hurricane relief charities.
His latest online exhibit (link ganked from gothtique) is RUNNING THE NUMBERS: An American Self-Portrait. It's just... words fail. It's horrible and beautiful. Go look. It won't take long.
And DAMMIT, we JUST missed the show "Altered States, Views of Transition in Recent Photography," at the Tufts University Art Gallery, curated by Alicia Cornwell. It ran from January 19th to April 1st, 2007. Poo.
I need more art in my life.
