Friday night, laurenpburka called me up & asked if I wanted to see Gwoemul (aka The Host, English title) with her. It's a Korean flick, with subtitles, she says. She offered to tell me about it or just let myself be surprised, but she promised that, either way, it would make me laugh.

So I said "OK!" and ended up dragging Eric P. (who's back living in MA again) along with us.

Upon spying a poster for this movie, as we walked into the Kendall Square Theater, we got a big hint about what sort of movie it was gonna be. It depicted a very small girl wrapped in a really big tentacle, sticking up out of dark, murky water.

Ut oh.

Ayep. Horror movie. The funniest, goofiest, most well-made horror flick since my all-time favorite, Tremors.

If you like your horror flicks liberally mixed with comedy, but still able to startle you and be shocking as hell, in addition to being surprisingly affecting and sad, this flick is for you. Big thumbs up!

Damn. DAMN. Weird dreams tonight, I'll bet.

Edit: By the by, thanks again laurenpburka, I really enjoyed it!

Rock! I didn't realize it had hit the Kendall. I haven't seen it yet, but my impression from what I've read is that The Host falls more in the monster movie category?

'cause I loves me some monster movies...

Oh yes, monster movie.

Sorry, I don't watch a lot of horror and thus forget to mention the subgenres.

MONSTER! Really good MONSTROUS EFFECTS too.

Interesting.

Honestly, that makes more sense than "The Host."

Since the original has been out in Korea for a year, I checked out IMDB on it. Apparently the first scene in the movie is based on something that actually happened. No, really.

I saw that. That's just so completely and utterly disturbing on multiple levels.

Well, I was hungry when I got home and ate a big bowl of ice cream with dark chocolate sauce and rainbow sprinkles.

So I was digesting. But now I'm finally tired enough to go crash...

I loved Tremors. It's just so ... almost yet not quite believable. And whats-his-face, Ron Gross? as the survivalist nutcake after being Mr. Keating. Brilliant.

Michael Gross, and yeah, he was an inspired choice of casting.

Yeah, that's pretty understandable. Especially coming from you.
