I remember being thrilled to learn that I could write poetry whenever I wanted.

I didn't HAVE to wait for inspiration, I could just write, whatever, wherever.

What happened to that?

You probably still can. You just have to be willing to keep going even if the output at any particular moment isn't as good as you'd like it to be. Setting the bar higher for yourself in terms of the work comes with a corresponding degree of added difficulty. After all, if it was easy, anyone could do it. :)

I used to be able to do that, too. Maybe your muse eloped with mine. Maybe they'll write their own musical, since "Never After" has inaugurated the lesbian fairy tale tradition.
