If You Like David Sedaris, You Might Like... [Jun. 4th, 2009|06:49 am]

I have finally accepted a truth that many of you have suspected for years.

I love David Sedaris' writing.

HOWEVER, I really only enjoy his personal essays. His short stories actively disturb me.

I'd like to read more stuff in the area of humorous personal essays of the nonfiction variety. (Otherwise, if I just read his stuff, I'll burn myself out on his work; WoWFTVoE.)

Not uncoincidentally, I suspect this may be the area where I have the best chance of getting published and I believe I need more exposure.

Suggestions/recommendations?

Have you read Richard Feynman's memoirs?

I read one of his books (SURELY YOU'RE JOKING, I think), but you're right, I should read more.

Thanks!

You know David Sedaris is going to be at Porter Square Books tonight at 7, right?

Augusten Burroughs frequently gets compared to Sedaris, but I don't really see it--Burroughs doesn't have the same humor. I Was Told There'd Be Cake by Sloane Crosley is supposed to be good (haven't read it), and Laurie Notaro's books (The Idiot Girls' Action Adventure Club, among others) share a self-deprecating humor but her humor isn't as dry.

This list should give you some starting points, too. (Scroll down for non-fiction titles.)

This is what happens when you let a librarian read your LJ entries! :)

Dang! I did NOT know he was in town! I did get to see him read recently though, so I'm not TOO bummed that I missed this. (I'm working.)

And I LOVE having librarians reading my LJ!

Librarians are awesome!

Aw, thanks!

Let this be a lesson, though: we lurk along quietly and you don't even know we're around, but ask one book-related question, and there we are!
