I don't have a good SHORT answer for when people ask "what are you doing?" or "what do you do for a living?" or "what are you up to these days?"

I just say, "Fuckin' around." Which is funny (as intended) but generates curiosity (unintended; it's just meant to be pithy).

Then, if they're actually curious, I mention a few jobs. And if they're progressively more curious, I mention more jobs. Ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

I need a better short answer...

How does "I'm a Modern Day Factotum!" sound?

Probably would engender more curiosity.

Or maybe just, "I'm a consultant." People never know what consultants do, so that might work. And if they politely ask "Oh? What kind?" I can say "IT and Internet stuff... YOU know" and that'll be enough to satisfy the requirements of polite conversation.

NB: At the reunion, my friend Gerylee - pronounced GaryLEE - nailed me for saying "California... I think" when asked about the location of my parents, stating I said it that way on purpose to make it more interesting. Probably true (and I don't know exactly where in California they are, although I'm pretty sure that's the state they're in), although phrasing things in the most amusing way possible is instinctual at this point. I like being funny. Also, I DO have interesting parents.

But I don't want to go to that place where one says things in an obscure way on purpose in order to force the other person to ASK about it, putting one in a position of power within the conversational structure, pressuring the other person to ask questions regarding a topic about which they don't really want to know more.

The flip side of that semi-power-play is when you say something deliberately obscure and they nod and smile, leaving you hanging.
