This is an interesting article about a forgotten piece of phone phreaker (and therefore hacker) history: http://www.counterpunch.org/price06302008.html
The author makes an excellent point about its relevance today, with regard to the attempts to give various phone companies immunity against prosecution for wiretapping, reminding us that we should recall how the close relationship between the FBI and TPC (The Phone Company) allowed TPC to get away with lots of illegal stuff.
Stuff they should never be able to get away with again.
