I Yam What I Yam, Karen! [Mar. 18th, 2008|12:26 am]

I am a feminist.

Y'know, in case there was any doubt.

Why mention it? Well, when I was in college, I was kind of self-conscious about it, because it was widely equated with man-hating and anger and a lot of other junk. So I was pretty reluctant to identify myself as a feminist and I may have even denied being a feminist at least three times, before the cock crowed (crew?).

Since then, over time, I've had my brain expanded, my information updated, my orneriness encouraged, and all kinds of other good stuff. But none of that is external, so I just thought I'd mention it. Out loud. Outside of my head.

I am a feminist.

Pretty basic. Women and men should be treated as equals. There's lots of other details, like biological differences, that are mostly situationally relevant.

Heh. I don't think anyone's a perfect feminist, eh? Cuz no one's a perfect anything, except perfectly themselves.

The only thing that's different is that I remember saying in high school that I was a feminist, but not a lesbian separatist. Because lesbians, you know, beyond the pale.

In the long run, I'm definitely not a separatist, although I do appreciate womyn-only space. But clearly, the lesbian thing... well, I'm not cool enough to be a lesbian. I turned out to be something even MORE beyond the pale: *gasp* bisexual!
