Why? [Nov. 29th, 2008|01:56 am]

Why didn't anybody tell me the ridiculously funny thing that happened during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade?

Click it. Seriously. It's safe for work.

The Cartoon Network Rick-rolled the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Damn.

*Insert lots of disclaimers about being dumb, out of touch, or a bad conspicuous consumer*

But I don't get it. Is "Rick-rolled" a joke that everyone but me gets?

short form: yes.

long form: "rick-rolling" is something that came out of the weird depths of the internet. it's kind of like randomly convincing people to click on links that unexpectedly take them to realdoll.com, or goatse, or something like that. except what the link goes to is rick astley's video for "never gonna give you up"

some mashup folks have a whole set of rick astley related mashups.

oh, my favorite example of this is the video with clips from obama speeches stitched together so he's reciting the lyrics to 'never gonna give you up'

it's kinda awesome

oh, and on april fool's day this past year, every video on the youtube front page actually led to rick astley's video.

I was quite amused... and from the look on his face, so was Mr. Astley!
